Toni Odom-Kelly

Sustainability Intern

Office of Sustainability

My name is Toni Odom – Kelly, and I am studying English and Africana Studies. Being from New Haven, Connecticut, I have been privileged to exist around a diverse community, which has therefore drawn me to various humanitarian fields. My work in climate justice began when I was 16, and from the rallies and marches I participated in, to the riveting speeches I had the honor of hearing, climate justice left a mark on me. During my time at the Office of Sustainability, I hope to make a substantial contribution to the amazing work already being done through research and outreach. I hope to educate myself and others more on the topic of environmental racism, and how we can mitigate the impacts of climate change while also protecting those who are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis. I plan to transfer my knowledge from studying Africana studies to inform my research, aiming for a seamless intersection of the two. I also plan to use my transferable skills as an English major to analyze the environmental crises that I encounter and create informed and strategical solutions. Post UConn, I hope to attend graduate school and pursue a career in academia.
