Test the soil

Sustainable nutrient management of turfgrass should begin with a soil test, obtainable from the College's Soil and Nutrient Analysis Laboratory. If nutrients are required, a recommendation will indicate how much fertilizer should be applied, reducing the potential for applying excessive fertilizer and losses from leaching or runoff. The nutrient nitrogen is of primary importance because color, density, and growth of grasses are greatly affected by its availability.
