Landscape Construction: Runoff Management

Roy Jeffrey

Slow down the movement of water across your property.

The US EPA reports that stormwater runoff causes the majority of water pollution problems in the US today. The Jordan Cove project in Connecticut has demonstrated that effective management of runoff from residential properties protects water quality of surface waters. In addition, effective runoff management will help protect wetlands and aquatic ecosystems and serve to mitigate flooding.

Manage water flow on your property by taking the following actions:

  • Eliminate curbs and gutters from your driveway and sidewalk area
  • Construct swales and rain gardens in your yard
  • Install rain barrels at downspouts from your house
  • Increase use of pervious pavement in your driveway and sidewalk areas
